THE BREAK NYC calls on Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to run an independent campaign through the Nov. general election

THE BREAK NYC, a new coalition working to build truly independent politics in New York City, today called on New York State Assemblyman and avowed socialist Zohran Mamdani to commit to running in the general election as an independent socialist candidate for New York City mayor.

Mamdani, who was elected to office as a Democrat, is currently running in the Democratic Party’s mayoral primary. As an organization committed to socialist values, THE BREAK NYC sees partisan primaries as bottlenecks designed to strangle descent and ensure that a small group of party power brokers make decisions that will affect millions.

New York City voters deserve–and are owed–better. Any candidate that claims to be a socialist should be committed to ensuring that an independent opportunity for change is offered on the ballot in November, regardless of the results in the Democratic primary election.

With independent nominating petitions eligible for circulation today, April 15, Mamdani and any other principled socialist have the opportunity to make sure a socialist is on the ballot this fall. As the leading candidate claiming the socialist mantle in the mayoral election, Assemblyman Mamdani also has an obligation to help break the stranglehold the Democratic Party has on politics in New York City.

THE BREAK NYC stands ready to tap into the considerable experience within its coalition to help Mamdani and any other candidate interested in running as an independent socialist candidate for mayor in the general election. THE BREAK NYC is also calling on like-minded organizations and individuals to join our call for independent politics, by reaching out to us and signing our petition on our website, which calls for an independent socialist mayoral candidate.

STATEMENT: Adams running as an independent

Setting aside the nakedly self-serving and cynical nature of the decision, THE BREAK NYC understands Mayor Eric Adams's decision to forego the Democratic Party primary process in favor of running as an independent candidate for mayor on the November ballot. New Yorkers are desperate for independent politics that leaves the broken two-party system and the failed Democratic Party behind.

But Eric Adams is not the person, and his decision to continue to run as a candidate for mayor does not represent the change we need. He is a hopelessly compromised, corrupt, regressive figure. When he's not committing criminally corrupt acts, he's done little but harm everyday New Yorkers since being elected.

THE BREAK NYC is calling for a real independent candidate for mayor who will run as a principled socialist all the way through until the election in November. Building an independent political coalition that truly speaks to the needs and concerns of New Yorkers is the best antidote to the kind of failed politics exemplified by Eric Adams.
